macOS (formerly called and stylized as "Mac OS X" and "OS X", with "X" being the Roman numeral rather than the letter) is a Unix-like operating system developed by Apple, Inc. for use on their Macintosh line of personal computers. It is the successor of MacOS 9, the last version of the "classic" MacOS.
The macOS series of operating systems is exclusively meant for use on Macintoshes, and each version is coined a name of a large feline, for example Mac OS X 10.4 was called "Tiger". However, since 2013, the newest versions have been named after Californian locations. The current version of macOS is 10.15, "Catalina" (2019).
