FreeDOS is a free and open-source operating system for IBM PC-compatible computers. It is designed to be backwards-compatible with MS-DOS, while adding new features. Although not MS-DOS programs will run on FreeDOS, most that use documented APIs will work fine. The FreeDOS project was created by Jim Hall in 1994 after hearing that MS-DOS would be discontinued as a stand-alone operating system.
