"DOS" is short for "disk operating system", a type of operating system focusing on the management of disks storing data for the computer. It also usually refers to a family of closely-related OSes for IBM PC-compatible home computers and personal computers using a similar text-based command line interface and granting software intercompatibility. Among those, the most popular were IBM PC-DOS and MS-DOS, developed by Microsoft Corporation for IBM-produced and non-IBM-produced PCs, respectively.
