The Apple II family of machines was Apple Computer's first and most famous group of home computers. The first machine, The Apple II, was released on June 7, 1977. The last Apple IIs were sold in 1992. (source: Wikipedia). The names of the machines can be spelled Apple //, Apple 2, Apple ][, and Apple II.
The Apple II, Apple II+, Apple ][e Platnum, and Apple II e+ used a 6502 CPU; however; the Apple ][c, Apple ][c Enhanced, Apple II e, and Apple IIe Enhanced used a MOS 65C02. Because it was 16-bit, the Apple IIgs used a MOS 65C816. All the machines used 1 CPU, but many had the option to add a Z80-card so the computer could run CP/M as well
Models
Apple //
The first Apple II computers went on sale on June 5, 1977 with a MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor running at 1 MHz, 4 KB of RAM (expandable to 48 KB), an audio cassette interface for loading programs and storing data, and the Integer BASIC programming language built into the ROMs. The video controller displayed 24 lines by 40 columns of upper-case-only text on the screen, with NTSC composite video output suitable for display on a monitor, or on a TV set by way of an RF modulator. The original retail price of the computer was $1298 with 4KB of RAM and $2638 with 48KB of RAM, the maximum amount of memory supported on the original motherboard.
As already mentioned, an Apple II came with a MOS 6502, which could run up to 1 MHz. The Apple II had 8 expansion slots, a place to plug in the RF-Modulator, and slot for a cassette recorder slot.
Later, there were 5.25" disk drives available for this machine. Each disk for these drives had a maximum capicity of 116 KB or 140 KB.
